Popular DVD: The Complete Season One
A curious blend of sarcastic and satirical humor with genuine concern for issues facing teens, POPULAR never lived up to its name in the ratings and was canceled after two seasons. That last season of the short lived show is collected on POPULAR: SECOND SEASON, with all 21 episodes included. The second season features guest stars such as Ann-Margret, Ed McMahon, and RuPaul. POPULAR concerns two girls, Brooke, the well-liked blonde cheerleader, and Sam, her brunette opposite. The pair are thrust into each others lives, however, when their parents begin dating, making them near-stepsisters. POPULAR, like many of its contemporary teen comedies on TV and in film, takes the social structure of high school seriously, and examines it satirically to reveal its absurdities and how it is ultimately little different from the world of adults. Popular DVD: The Complete Season One
The hilarious high school comedy POPULAR is sarcastic, self-conscious, and in on its own joke, just like the teens whose mundane and exquisite drama the series captures. Centering around the lives of stepsisters Brooke McQueen (Leslie Bibb) and Sam McPherson (Carly Pope), POPULAR finds a great deal of humor in the warring cliques of teen girls -- and provides sly social commentary in the process. Blonde, wealthy, and sophisticated beyond her years Brooke, needless to say, heads up her high school's in-crowd, along with the vicious and also blonde Nicole (Tammy Lynn Michaels) and Mary Cherry (Leslie Grossman). Sam, though equally stunning, finds herself an outcast, along with hyper-activist Lily (Tamara Mello), geeky Harrison (Christopher Gorham), and the voluptuous Carmen (Sara Rue). As it dissects the perennial divide between the popular kids and everyone else, POPULAR comments on the inanity of cliques, with Brooke and Sam eventually growing close as sisters, but refusing to cross enemy lines at school. It also provides insight into the state of contemporary teenage angst, with teachers who literally attack their students, complicated family relationships in which kids play as large a part in the emotional dynamics as do their parents, and a chaotic social system where kids desperate to figure out their identity must fight the labels placed on them by their peers. This program contains the complete first season of the series. Price and more info/Order it! |
