What's Happening!! DVD The Third Season One of a spate of urban sitcoms to emerge in the 1970s, WHAT'S HAPPENING was based on the 1975 film COOLEY HIGH, and followed three black teens into early adulthood. Roger "Raj" Thomas (Ernest Thomas) was a studious young man with a bratty sister, Dee (Danielle Spencer); the siblings lived with their mother Mabel "Mama" Thomas (Mabel King), in a lower-middle class Chicago home. Raj was most often hanging out with his friends Freddie "Rerun" Stubbs (Fred Berry)--so dubbed for his propensity to repeat classes--and Dwayne Nelson (Haywood Nelson), a somewhat dim young man with a nonetheless active imagination. The three were forever executing ill-advised schemes to either get rich, have fun, or some combination of the two, while little Dee was forever telling on them. The third and final season sees an end to Mama's character, and Shirley, the waitress at the boys' hangout, Rob's Place, has moved into the Thomas household. Meanwhile, Raj and Rerun have graduated high school and moved into an apartment of their own. Over the course of the season, Raj gets a job as a nude artist's model, the boys try to navigate the myriad challenges of living together, and Dee is accused of shoplifting. What's Happening!! DVD The Second Season A situation comedy that ran from 1976 to 1979, centering on the exploits of three black teens growing up in a lower middle class neighborhood in L.A. Roger "Raj" Thomas, Dwayne, and Rerun-who got his nickname due to all the classes he failed and had to repeat-are always coming up with schemes and making mischief, which are often foiled by Raj's little sister and making them subject to the discipline meted out by Raj's mom, Mable "Mama" Thomas. Shirley Wilson, the sassy waitress at the local hangout, rounds out the cast, and Raj's dad occasionally makes an appearance. The guys get their first taste of love, dabble in the mysteries of a cult, and survive brushes with the authorities in this season, while issues of classism and racism are evident in the show's themes. Through their hairbrained schemes to have fun and/or get rich, they learn lessons about growing up--usually through punishment doled out by Raj's mother (Mabel King) because his bratty sister Dee (Danielle Spencer) tattled on him. The series ran from 1976-1979. The originally cast returned for the syndicated series What's Happening Now!! in 1985. This 3-DVD set includes all 21 episodes of the original series.
